Our intent is not to duplicate efforts that already exist, but rather to create a system that is flexible enough to allow for equivalency recognition. We are still in the exploration phase of what equivalency recognition may look like.

The approved criteria for the new Materials Matter Standard will be launched on December 12, 2025. From the effective date in 2026, certified organizations can request audits by approved certification bodies. The mandatory date is expected to be in 2027, and organizations must complete their next audit to the new standard to maintain their certification from that date onwards.

According to our Standard Setting Procedure, there will be a minimum one-year transition period provided to certified sites and certification bodies before the new standard system becomes mandatory. Textile Exchange will continue to operate its current standards until the completion of the transition period.

Initially we decided to look at opportunities to harmonize our standards across all fibers and materials to bring the benefits of efficiency to all impacted stakeholders.  This includes certified sites that may hold more than one certificate, certification bodies and auditors who need to study each standard, and for Textile Exchange staff managing the standards.  As we moved forward, our timeline synced with the opportunity to embed our key impact areas, including those related to our Climate+ goal, into the future unified standard system.

On a high-level, practice-based criteria define best practices that need to be implemented to meet the intent of the standard. On the other hand, outcome-based criteria define outcomes based on desired impacts, then monitoring, evaluating, and recording progress on these outcomes over time. We are still developing with the International Working Group what this will look like for the unified standard.

In April 2021, Textile Exchange began a revision of the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) 4.0 and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) 2.0. In July 2021, Textile Exchange began a comprehensive revision of the Textile Exchange Standards framework with the intent to embed its Climate+ strategy into a more unified standard system across its suite of standards.  The GRS/RCS revision that we began in early 2021 will roll into the development of the unified standard system. You can read more about this on our website here.

Yes, the CCS will be part of the unified standard system as our core chain of custody requirements for tracking certified inputs and outputs. The CCS will not be included in the revision of the unified standard system, but rather, it will stay on a separate development track to service our current standards as well as to support the implementation of the unified standard system.

The focus of the unified standard system will be on the fiber and material production level, in line with Textile Exchange’s strategy and Climate+ goals. We are also interested in exploring how to link other facility-level certifications or practices with our CCS/chain of custody.

By 2030, our goal is to guide the textile industry to achieve a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions within fiber and raw material production. There is an opportunity to use standards and certification as a tool to drive towards our Climate+ goals, by identifying practices and desired outcomes within the standard that we will monitor and measure over time as part of the certification process.
